Article by Felicity Zadro

As the world is being swept up by the Twitter bug, more and more small and medium sized business owners are considering, what is twitter and what can it do for my business?

What is Twitter?

Twitter is like the newspaper boy standing on the street corner yelling, ‘Extra, extra, read all about it! New medium for business! Read all about it!’ It is a headline, a blast of information, news or opinion that is being broadcast. But in Twitter’s case, instead of just passersby getting the news, people who have opted-in (your followers) see your headlines first, and instead of only people in a restricted area getting the information, it is open for the entire online world to hear.

So if you could get short sharp bursts of information out to a targeted group of people – who want to hear your news – what would you say? What impression would you want to give? What story would you tell?

Enough of the pet news please!

People tweeting about episodes with their pets or their dinner are scaring the business community away. Busy business people don’t have time to read this stuff and most people don’t care about the personal minutia of their colleague’s lives. If your persona is key to your brand, then sure be personal – but be clever.

What to Tweet?

Using Twitter for business means having interesting, credible and relevant information about your work, your clients or your business related activities. You can also use it as a teaser or a pointer to something else. You might mention the special you have just uploaded on your website, the headline article in your newest e-newsletter or an article published by someone else who talks about an issue related to your product and service. Twitter is a Business Tool

It is important to consider that whilst Twitter is already changing the way people interact and communicate with you - it is still a business tool. It is vital to have a strategy for your use of Twitter; guidelines for the information you will send, who you will connect with etc (see Julia’s article on Social Media Plans).

Even if you choose not to use Twitter for your business (it isn’t relevant for everyone), at least go and explore the newest phenomenon, just so you know what everyone is talking about!
